DOMAINÂ 1
General Security Concepts (12% of Exam)
This foundational Domain establishes the language and core principles of cybersecurity. You will learn to differentiate between various security controls and master fundamental concepts like the CIA triad, the Zero Trust security model, and the critical role of cryptography in securing modern data communications and storage.
- In a simulated environment, you will analyze a series of real-world organizational scenarios. Your task is to correctly identify and categorize the multiple security controls in place, dragging and dropping control types to their appropriate descriptions to mirror a performance-based exam question
- You will use tools like OpenSSL in a Linux virtual machine to generate public/private key pairs, create a Certificate Signing Request (CSR) for a web server, and use hashing algorithms (SHA-256) to create file checksums and verify data integrity.
DOMAIN 2
Threats, Vulnerabilities, and Mitigations (22% of Exam)
In this Domain, you will learn to think like an attacker to better defend your organization. We will dissect common threat actors, their motivations, and the attack vectors they exploit. You will learn to identify vulnerabilities in systems, applications, and networks, and apply effective mitigation techniques to reduce the attack surface.Â
- Using tools like Nmap and a vulnerability scanner in a contained virtual lab, you will perform a scan of a target network, discover open ports and services, analyze the output to identify potential vulnerabilities, and prioritize them based on severity
- You will analyze a collection of sample phishing emails to identify key indicators of malicious intent, such as sender address spoofing, malicious URLs hidden in hyperlinks, grammatical errors, and psychological manipulation tactics like urgency and scarcity.
DOMAIN 3
Security Architecture (18% of Exam)
Learn to design and build resilient and secure systems from the ground up. This Domain covers the security implications of different architecture models, from on-premises and cloud to IoT and industrial control systems (ICS). You will learn to apply security principles to secure enterprise infrastructure and protect data across its entire lifecycle: at rest, in transit, and in use.Â
- Using a network diagramming simulation, you will be given a set of business requirements to design a secure, multi-layered network. You will place firewalls, create a screened subnet (DMZ) for public-facing servers, and correctly position IDS/IPS sensors for optimal traffic monitoring.
- You will access a virtual firewall management interface and be tasked with configuring a set of access control list (ACL) rules. You will write rules to permit legitimate web and email traffic while explicitly denying traffic from known malicious IP addresses and blocking unneeded ports, simulating a common performance-based question.
- In a Windows virtual machine, you will use BitLocker to encrypt an entire data volume. In a Linux virtual machine, you will use tools to create an encrypted container, demonstrating platform-agnostic methods for securing data at rest.
DOMAINÂ 4
Security Operations (28% of Exam)
This is the largest and most critical Domain, focusing on the day-to-day, hands-on work of a security professional. You will learn to apply security techniques to computing resources, manage vulnerabilities, monitor for threats, and implement robust identity and access management (IAM). This Domain covers the entire incident response lifecycle, from preparation to lessons learned.Â
- You will be given access to a simplified SIEM dashboard populated with logs from firewalls, servers, and endpoints. Following a scenario, you will query and filter the log data to identify indicators of compromise, trace the attacker's activity, and determine the root cause of a security event.
- In a simulated HackTheBox Active, you will configure a user account to require a second factor of authentication (e.g., a soft token app) for login, demonstrating a critical hands-on IAM skill.Â
- Working through a guided, scenario-based simulation of a ransomware attack, you will make critical decisions at each phase of the incident response process. You will choose the correct actions for containment, eradication, and recovery from a list of options, reinforcing the proper procedures.
DOMAIN 5
Security Program Management and Oversight (20% of Exam)
- Given a scenario with asset values, exposure factors, and historical incident data, you will calculate the SLE and ALE to financially justify the implementation of a new security control.
- For a given critical business process, you will analyze dependencies and determine the appropriate Recovery Time Objective (RTO) and Recovery Point Objective (RPO) to inform the disaster recovery strategy.
- You will review a sample Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) and a Password Policy. Your task is to identify key components, evaluate their strengths and weaknesses against industry best practices, and suggest improvements.
Capstone Project & Exam Prep
Apply the knowledge you have gained throughout the course in a real-world, hands-on capstone project.
- Â Conduct a vulnerability assessment or penetration test of a simulated enterprise network in Cyber Pros HackTheBox VMs
